New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov has formally petitioned the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to initiate a federal civil rights investigation targeting New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Novakhov claims that Mayor Mamdani's stance and public declarations have created a dangerous environment that directly correlates with an increase in hate incidents.
Rising Violence and Political Rhetoric
The federal complaint follows two severe stabbing incidents in New York City, one of which involved an attack on a Jewish man outside a synagogue. Novakhov attributed these events directly to escalating rhetoric that encourages antisemitism without adequate condemnation from local leadership.
Characterizing the mayor's political direction, Novakhov stated that Mamdani represents a radical, antisemitic, and anti-police movement.
Demands for Federal Oversight
The submission to the Department of Justice marks a significant escalation in the legal and public challenge regarding official accountability. Novakhov emphasized the need to establish clear boundaries concerning the responsibility of elected officials to maintain public safety and curb incitement.
Writing on X, Novakhov confirmed he was fulfilling a promise to hold Mayor Mamdani accountable for inciting antisemitism in New York, adding that no individual is above the law.
