Hero Catches Falling Toddler: Brave Rescue in China

A two-year-old girl survived a fall from approximately 20 feet in the Chinese city of Bozhou last week, thanks to a passerby who positioned himself to catch her at the critical moment.

The incident occurred on a street in the Shuanglan district of Bozhou, located in Anhui Province. According to local reports, the toddler had climbed onto a decorative awning above a storefront facing the street. Within moments, she found herself beyond the edge of the structure, clinging to the awning's rim and dangling above the pavement.

Pedestrians who spotted the child began shouting for help. Zhu Liang, a 39-year-old man happened to be passing through at the time.

Security camera footage shows Liang quickly assessing that the girl could fall at any second. He ran to the spot where he estimated she would land, extended his arms, and braced himself to break her fall.

Seconds later, the toddler lost her grip and plummeted from the six-meter height.

Liang succeeded in catching her, though the force of the impact proved far greater than anticipated. According to local media, he was unable to maintain a complete hold, and the child slid along his leg to the ground. However, Liang's body absorbed a substantial portion of the impact force.

The girl was taken for medical examination. Doctors determined she had suffered primarily a fractured ankle, with no other serious injuries. For her family, the outcome brought immense relief after moments of fearing the worst.

Liang himself did not emerge from the incident unscathed. Following the rescue, he experienced difficulty lifting his arm and suffered pain in his back and legs. Despite this, he did not immediately seek medical attention.

According to reports, Liang works in the herbal medicine trade and had been on his way to get food when the incident occurred.

The child's mother explained that she had been at home organizing when the incident happened. Her daughter had accidentally become locked inside the residence, and the mother was attempting to open the door. She stepped away briefly to search for a key, then heard screaming from the street. When she reached the ground level, she discovered her daughter already in danger of falling.

After learning her daughter had been saved, the mother tried to thank the man who rescued her. She offered Liang money and asked to accompany him for medical examination after seeing he had also been injured during the rescue.

But Liang refused.

He also declined to provide his contact information and eventually left the scene. According to the report, his wife arrived later to collect him.

It was precisely this behavior after the rescue that made the story particularly moving: a man who performed an act that could have resulted in serious injury to himself sought neither compensation nor recognition.

In a subsequent interview, Liang said the force of the fall had been much greater than he expected. He even expressed regret that he had not managed to catch the child perfectly. Only after learning that her condition was stable and that she had not been seriously hurt did he feel at ease.
