Beit Shemesh Child Murder: Psychiatric Care Denied Days Before

A Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Tuesday extended the detention of Liel Ifargan, 26, the suspect in last week's fatal stabbing of seven-year-old Hillel Mordechai Dadon and serious wounding of his four-year-old cousin in Beit Shemesh. The court ordered Ifargan held until September 3, 2026, at the request of investigators from the Jerusalem District Central Unit handling the complex case.

As the investigation continues, disturbing details have emerged about warning signs that went unheeded in the days before the tragedy. According to a report by Ynet journalist Liran Tamari, members of Ifargan's family contacted their health maintenance organization just days before the attack, requesting an urgent psychiatric evaluation. The family was told that he did not pose an immediate danger, and the earliest available appointment for a psychiatric assessment was scheduled for December of this year—months after their urgent request. The report also revealed that Ifargan had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility several years ago but was later released after professionals determined he posed no danger to himself or others.

Police Suspect Drug Use During Attack

As the investigation unfolds, investigators are examining troubling details surrounding the circumstances of the deadly assault. According to a report by i24NEWS, police increasingly suspect that Ifargan carried out the attack while under the influence of drugs.

Following a request by his defense attorneys to have him undergo psychiatric evaluation during his detention, an initial assessment was conducted which determined that the suspect is fit to be held in custody. Investigators continue to focus on understanding what motivated the fatal attack on the children.

The tragedy unfolded last week at a residence in Beit Shemesh. Young Hillel Mordechai Dadon had been brought to the home where his family was preparing a surprise party for him, and his four-year-old cousin had come to play with him. One of the children's fathers later discovered the horrific scene when he noticed both boys stabbed and bleeding inside an inflatable pool in the yard. He rushed to pull them out, but medical personnel were forced to pronounce Hillel dead at the scene, while his cousin was evacuated in critical condition. The cousin was recently released home following complex surgery.

Timeline: Brief Visit, Then Return to Attack

Police investigation findings indicate that the suspect arrived at the vicinity of the residence either weeks or hours before the incident and had a brief conversation with the homeowner. He then returned to his own home, and several hours later came back to the scene, spotted the young children, and carried out the fatal stabbings.

Chief Inspector Guy Avrahami, deputy head of the interrogation division at Jerusalem District Police, stated: "We arrived at a very difficult scene, where a young child was found dead while playing in a pool. At this stage we are focusing investigative efforts on understanding exactly what the suspect's motive was and what led him to harm the children."

Jerusalem District Police officers arrested the suspect shortly afterward near the murder scene. The investigation continues with the aim of completing the evidence for indictment, as troubling questions about failures in the mental health system are being raised with increasing urgency.
