A massive fire broke out shortly before midnight on Friday near the tomb of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of the Chabad Hasidic movement, in Hadiach within Ukraine's Poltava region. The blaze spread rapidly through the pilgrimage complex, destroying the main synagogue and causing millions of dollars in property damage across the historic landmark.
The holy site stands as the second largest Jewish prayer location in Ukraine, attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims every year prior to the outbreak of war. Despite ongoing wartime conditions, approximately 10,000 visitors continue to travel to the shrine annually to pay their respects and offer prayers.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene as the flames engulfed multiple structures within the complex grounds. The main sanctuary structure was almost completely destroyed by the inferno, while surrounding support facilities including the kitchen and guest reception area suffered total destruction.
Initial investigative assessments suggest that an electrical short circuit may have ignited the blaze, though emergency officials and local investigators continue examining all potential origin points. Local emergency services worked to contain the flames and prevent further destruction to surrounding property.
No casualties or physical injuries occurred during the incident. The local Chabad emissary, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitsch, along with his family members, safely evacuated the premises as the fire spread across the complex grounds.
Reflecting on the severe damage to the historic site, Rabbi Shneur Deitsch expressed profound sorrow over the destruction while pledging to rebuild the sacred location. "We are in total shock," Deitsch stated, adding that "With Hashem's help, we will find the strength to rebuild everything."
Reconstruction planning for the complex is expected to begin following official safety clearance from local municipal authorities. Community leaders and international supporters have signaled early commitments to assist with funding and restoration efforts across the site.
