Left Likud, joined Liberman, now out again

Illouz quits over Liberman haredi deal

The former Likud MK, who joined Liberman's party over the draft law, now leaves again after Liberman announced he would form a government with the chareidi parties in exchange for a soft draft bill

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu

MK Dan Illouz, who left the Likud in protest over the draft bill proposed by MK Boaz Bismuth and joined Yisrael Beiteinu, announced today that he is now leaving Liberman's party as well, following Liberman's statement that he would work to form a government with the chareidi parties.

In his statement, Illouz wrote: "We cannot give up on the draft law. This is not just a matter of values, it is an existential need. Reservists are doing hundreds of days of reserve duty. The army is crying out for fighters. The economy cannot carry this. The security challenges facing us are enormous. And all this before we even talk about core curriculum studies and integration into the economy."

"I understand the desire to prevent another election. But the price cannot be an exemption law. This is an explicit promise we made to the voter before the elections. That is the reason I moved from Likud to Yisrael Beiteinu," he continued.

Illouz concluded: "In the 25th Knesset I fought against the coalition's exemption law. I was removed from the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee because of it, and the law did not pass. If I have to, I will fight against an exemption law if it comes from the other side, even as a citizen. I succeeded then and I hope to succeed now."

"I am not a man of blocs. What matters to me in a government is the policy it promotes. The right way to prevent elections is to give up on the blocs, to define agreed-upon basic principles, and to establish a Zionist unity government that will win the wars, draft haredim, and bring significant economic reforms."
