Three people were killed Tuesday night when an NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles while covering a deadly crash involving a Metro bus, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The helicopter went down just before 7 p.m. local time between two commercial buildings on the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue in the San Fernando Valley, CBS Los Angeles reported. The aircraft appeared to have come down on top of two shipping containers and several parked vehicles, and a large fire broke out and spread to nearby cars.

LAFD Captain Branden Silverman said one victim appeared to have been outside the helicopter when it crashed and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire officials later said two more people were declared dead at the crash site, and a fourth person was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Silverman told reporters the helicopter was largely destroyed and that crews would have to search the wreckage to determine how many people had been on board.

NBC Los Angeles, also known as KNBC, confirmed shortly before 9 p.m. that the helicopter belonged to the station. The station's live stream showed the aircraft slowly descending before the feed cut out, according to BNO News, and anchors said on air that they were having trouble reaching their colleagues.

Several television news helicopters were over the area at the time, covering an earlier collision between a Metro bus and an SUV that left two people dead and several others injured.

The cause of the helicopter crash is not yet known. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were called in to assist, and Los Angeles police are also investigating.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on X that she was "absolutely devastated by the loss of life in Chatsworth tonight." She offered condolences to the families of those killed in both the bus collision and the helicopter crash, and thanked city emergency crews for their quick response.
