Iran Targeted Netanyahu's Son, PM Says

Israeli prime minister discloses previously classified intelligence about threat to his family, defending security arrangements as election campaign intensifies

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed Monday evening that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, revealing intelligence information that had been under a publication ban for months. Speaking with Israel's Channel 14, Netanyahu described the threat as "something unbelievable," stating that "Iran targeted one of my sons, tried to murder one of my sons." The revelation came amid criticism of enhanced security measures provided to the prime minister's family members. Netanyahu defended the arrangements, saying "this security is not a luxury—without it, they will succeed. People need to show restraint even during an election campaign."

The prime minister did not specify which of his two sons—Yair or Avner—was targeted, nor did he provide details about the nature of the threat or when it occurred. However, he emphasized that the information came from credible intelligence sources and necessitated significantly increased security measures. The disclosure adds to a growing body of intelligence revealed in recent months about Iranian attempts to harm senior Israeli figures. The Iranian regime has long viewed Netanyahu and his family as legitimate targets in its conflict with Israel.

Yair Netanyahu, the prime minister's elder son, maintains an active public profile and frequently comments on political issues. He was recently appointed to the Likud party's central committee. Avner Netanyahu, the younger son, generally avoids the spotlight and maintains a more private lifestyle.

Israeli security services have uncovered multiple Iranian plots in recent years aimed at harming senior Israeli officials and their family members. Security agencies work continuously to thwart such threats, often in close coordination with foreign security partners. Netanyahu concluded his remarks with a call for restraint on the matter, asking that his family's security not become a political issue during the election campaign, while stressing the genuine danger that necessitates protective measures.
