Queen Camilla of Britain has broken her silence about the emotional strain of keeping her husband King Charles III's cancer diagnosis confidential during the initial period following the news. Speaking publicly for the first time about the ordeal, the Queen described the challenge of maintaining secrecy while visiting cancer patients who were unaware of the royal family's private struggle.
In a video produced to mark the 30th anniversary of a cancer support organization, Camilla recounted visiting a London cancer support center shortly after her husband received his diagnosis. "I remember coming to see patients at the institute right after the King was diagnosed. Nobody could say anything at that time, it was quite difficult," she said. The Queen went on to describe her internal conflict during those visits: "I almost said something but, you know, I felt it wasn't the time to say it. I nodded knowingly at everyone who was suffering and all the relatives, and I think it made me understand even more how important these places were." She added candidly: "I just wanted to let it out but of course I couldn't."
Camilla also praised her husband's determination to continue his royal duties despite undergoing treatment. "Look at my husband, nothing stopped him," she said in the video. "He just said, this is my way, I'm going to deal with it."
Laura Lee, chief executive of the cancer support organization, welcomed the royal couple's openness. "The King's transparency about his diagnosis has undoubtedly helped others to be more open themselves, and now hearing the Queen's completely understandable and natural response as a spouse illuminates why it's so important that family and friends also receive the support they need," Lee stated.
Buckingham Palace first revealed in February 2024 that King Charles was undergoing treatment for an unspecified form of cancer. The monarch continues to receive treatment, though he noted this past December that thanks to early diagnosis and effective intervention, the scope of his treatments has been reduced.
