Wildfire Forces Evacuation in Hebron Hills

Four firefighting aircraft deployed as flames spread toward homes in Efka; Route 60 closed in both directions as emergency crews battle blaze

Area of the fire

A major wildfire broke out Wednesday evening near the settlement of Efka in the southern Hebron Hills region of the West Bank, prompting the evacuation of residents as wind-driven flames advanced toward homes. No injuries have been reported so far.

Firefighters and volunteers from the Judea regional station are working across multiple sectors to contain the blaze. Initial crews arriving at the scene reported a broad fire line moving rapidly through brush adjacent to the settlement, heading directly toward residential structures.

Four firefighting aircraft from the "Elad" squadron were scrambled to the area and are operating alongside ground forces. Additional support teams from neighboring districts are en route to the fire zone to reinforce suppression efforts.

Fire and Rescue Services officials said the flames are advancing rapidly both through the brush near Efka and across open terrain surrounding the settlement. The primary focus of the aerial and ground crews is establishing firebreaks to prevent the flames from reaching homes.

Shift commander Reshef Liran Ben Harosh stated: "This is a fire that could reach the settlement's homes, due to its proximity to the brush. In the situation assessment I conducted, I ordered the deployment of firefighting aircraft from the 'Elad' squadron, and additionally ordered the dispatch of extra crews to the incident site."

Police have closed Route 60, a major north-south highway in the West Bank, to traffic in both directions between the communities of Adorayim and Otniel due to the fire. Officers from the Hebron station are assisting firefighters and keeping the road clear to allow emergency and firefighting vehicles to move freely.

Police urged motorists to avoid the closed section and follow instructions from officers and emergency personnel at the scene. Firefighting efforts continue as crews work to prevent the fire from spreading to Efka's homes.
