German defense contractor Rheinmetall has released demonstration footage of its HAMMR portable grenade launcher system, showing infantry soldiers operating in wooded terrain while engaging multiple target types in real time.
The video shows a soldier rapidly loading a magazine, designating targets using advanced optics, and firing semi-automatic rounds at a light vehicle, which sustains multiple penetrating hits. Additional footage demonstrates a precise strike against an airborne drone, as well as airburst munitions detonating above cover and structures to neutralize concealed adversaries.
Weighing approximately 4.1 kilograms (9 pounds), the HAMMR features an ergonomic design that enables full operation by a single soldier in the field. The weapon is fed from a 5-round magazine chambered in 40mm and equipped with a digital fire control system incorporating a laser rangefinder and ballistic computer, ensuring high hit probability from the first shot.
Using medium-velocity ammunition, the launcher achieves an effective range of approximately 900 meters while maintaining full compatibility with standard low-velocity rounds. This development provides infantry squads with autonomous, precision firepower equivalent to light artillery, and is considered the most advanced response developed following the cancellation of the XM25 project.
