The F-35 stealth fighter represents some of the most advanced military technology in the world. Equipped with sophisticated sensors, communications and computing systems, a large touchscreen display, and a unique helmet that projects information directly onto the pilot's visor, it embodies cutting-edge aerospace engineering.
Yet amid all this technology, one basic feature is conspicuously absent: pilots cannot extend a ladder from the cockpit to climb down to the ground.
The cockpit sits approximately 12 feet (3.7 meters) above the tarmac, requiring external equipment for pilots to board or exit the aircraft. This isn't an oversight — it's a deliberate design decision made during the aircraft's development.
