Thailand Plans Electric Air Taxi Framework

Eve Air Mobility, backed by Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Thai firm RV Connex to develop safety regulations, airspace protocols, and infrastructure needed for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft

Thailand is advancing toward a future of electric air taxis through a new partnership aimed at building the regulatory foundation for the technology. Eve Air Mobility and Thai aviation technology company RV Connex have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop the regulatory framework necessary for future operations of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as eVTOL.

The agreement does not envision immediate commercial flights but rather focuses on creating the conditions that would enable them down the line. The two companies plan to collaborate with government agencies, industry stakeholders, and academic institutions in Thailand to examine how these novel aircraft can be safely and efficiently integrated into the country's existing aviation system.

Areas under review include potential operational scenarios, safety requirements, airspace usage rules, and the infrastructure that would be needed to support air taxis at commercial scale. The partners intend to draw on standards being developed in other countries while adapting them to Thailand's specific conditions and needs.

Johann Bordais, CEO of Eve Air Mobility, said Thailand presents a significant opportunity for developing urban air mobility, and that working with RV Connex will allow the company to participate in shaping the regulatory framework needed for this emerging industry to grow.

Sujata Jantarang, president of RV Connex, added that the company aims to help position Thailand as one of the world's leading nations in advanced air transportation through modern regulations aligned as closely as possible with international standards.

Eve Air Mobility is developing an electric eVTOL aircraft designed primarily for short urban and regional flights. The company benefits from the knowledge and experience of Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, and alongside the aircraft itself is developing air traffic management systems and related services for the urban air mobility sector.

In recent months, Eve has made progress with flight testing of its prototype, and in early August the company announced it had completed a significant milestone in which the aircraft transitioned to wing-borne flight as part of its testing program toward future certification.

The Thai agreement does not yet include a commitment to purchase aircraft or a timeline for launching commercial service. At this stage, the focus is primarily on preparing the legal, operational, and infrastructure groundwork, but if the process advances as planned, it could bring Thailand closer to an era in which small electric aircraft transport passengers above congested city traffic.
