US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the Iranian delegation attending the UN General Assembly to leave New York earlier than planned, after attempts to advance indirect negotiations between the two countries ended without a breakthrough.
According to a report by Barak Ravid in Axios, the directive was issued Monday and included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who had remained in New York after the main General Assembly sessions concluded in order to participate in indirect contacts with the Americans.
A US official said that from Rubio's perspective, the Iranian delegation had already stayed longer than it was welcome, and that with the General Assembly events concluded, it was time for them to leave. The Associated Press confirmed the directive from two American officials.
