Ger Hasidim Rally at Beit Lid Over Arrest

Ger Hasidim mobilize for massive demonstration at Prison 10 following arrest of yeshiva student Israel Reuven Fein • MK Goldknopf visits imprisoned students, breaks down in tears | The full story behind the protest (Israel News)

Tens of thousands of Ger Hasidim are converging on Prison 10 in Beit Lid Monday evening for what marks the second major demonstration by Israel's largest Hasidic dynasty against the imprisonment of yeshiva students who refuse military conscription on religious grounds.

The mass rally follows the arrest of Israel Reuven Fein, a student at the prestigious Sfat Emet Yeshiva, who was detained and imprisoned despite appearing three consecutive times at the IDF recruitment office in an attempt to regularize his status. The arrest has ignited fury across the Haredi world, with Ger leadership characterizing the detention as a betrayal of assurances given to Torah scholars seeking to comply with administrative procedures.

The demonstration is scheduled to open at 9:30 PM with evening prayers led by the Gerrer Rebbe himself, with prominent philanthropist Rabbi Meir Cohen — who donated substantially to cover the rally's logistics — serving as prayer leader. Following the service, Rabbi Meir Flekser, head of the Chiddushei HaRim Yeshiva, will deliver what organizers described as fiery remarks of spiritual awakening to the assembled masses.

Hours before the rally commenced, United Torah Judaism chairman MK Yitzhak Goldknopf, accompanied by party operative Moti Babchik, conducted an emotional visit inside Prison 10 to meet with the incarcerated yeshiva students. Emerging from the facility visibly shaken, Goldknopf struggled to contain his tears as he addressed reporters.

"It is impossible to witness the tears of these young men and their parents, whose only transgression is walking the path of Torah and reverence as instructed by their rabbis," Goldknopf stated, his voice breaking. The visit underscored the deepening rift between the coalition government and its Haredi partners over military conscription legislation that recently passed the Knesset, halting arrests of draft evaders until November.

The timing of the demonstration reflects escalating tensions within Israeli society over Haredi military service. Last week, the Knesset approved controversial legislation granting immunity from arrest to tens of thousands of yeshiva students who avoid conscription, a move that triggered the resignation of Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel, who accused the government of undermining national security during wartime.

Security forces and police have deployed reinforced units around the prison compound in anticipation of the massive turnout. Organizers estimate that tens of thousands of Hasidim from across Israel will attend, with special transportation arrangements coordinated to shuttle participants from Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, and other Haredi population centers.

The demonstration occurs against the backdrop of intensifying political warfare over the draft issue. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently found himself forced to publicly rebuke Rabbi Dov Lando, the spiritual leader of the Lithuanian Haredi world, after the elderly sage characterized religious Zionist soldiers as participants in what he termed "real murder" — remarks that drew fierce condemnation from across the political spectrum.

Meanwhile, legal teams and Ger community activists continue pressing for Fein's immediate release through the courts, arguing that his detention violates assurances given to yeshiva students attempting to navigate the draft bureaucracy in good faith. The case has become a flashpoint in the broader struggle over how Israel balances its security needs with religious accommodation for the rapidly growing ultra-Orthodox sector.

Further updates to follow as the rally unfolds.
