President Donald Trump is pressing his advisers to organize a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as early as fall 2026, according to a report in the Financial Times.
Internal White House discussions are focusing on the possibility of holding the summit during a gathering of world leaders in China scheduled for November 2026, according to the report.
As part of efforts to reduce tensions, Trump has ordered a reduction in the scope of joint military exercises with South Korea. In a statement announcing the move, the president said the decision was made in part "based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un."
The decision has sent shockwaves through Washington and Seoul. The annual exercise, originally planned to last 11 days with 18,000 troops participating, is considered a central component of military preparedness vis-à-vis North Korea. Trump emphasized that he chose only to scale back the exercise because it was "too late to cancel it entirely."
