Low-Altitude Flyover: Jets Buzz Cape Town Rugby Stadium

Two commercial Airlink passenger aircraft flew at an extremely low altitude over a stadium packed with spectators in Cape Town on Saturday, just before a rugby match was set to begin. Video footage captured from the stands shows the planes passing remarkably close to the stadium's roof structure while pyrotechnic displays were being set off below.

What initially appeared to be a near-disaster turned out to be a carefully choreographed stunt. The flyover was part of a planned pre-game spectacle for a rivalry series match between two national rugby teams. Airlink had specially painted the two aircraft in colors representing each competing nation before they executed the pass over the stadium, which held approximately 55,000 spectators.

However, video recordings from various angles caused widespread alarm on social media. In some clips, the aircraft appear to pass within just a few meters of the roof, and at certain moments it seemed almost impossible to believe this was a planned maneuver rather than an emergency situation.

According to reports based on flight tracking data, the aircraft passed at an altitude of only several dozen meters above the top of the stadium structure. The angle from which the videos were filmed, however, may have significantly amplified the perceived proximity to the building.

The online reaction was swift. Social media users raised questions about safety margins in the event of a mechanical failure, bird strike, or unexpected change in the flight path. In response, Airlink stated that the flyover had been meticulously planned and executed only after thorough preparation, rehearsals, and approval from South African aviation authorities.

Ultimately, both aircraft completed the pass without incident and continued on their way.
