Escalating Economic Pressure

U.S. Warns: Iran Ties Risk Financial Cutoff

Treasury Department imposes 36 new sanctions on Iranian aviation sector while warning international companies they could be disconnected from global banking and credit card systems if they continue servicing Tehran's airlines

The United States has issued an unprecedented warning to the global financial and business community: any entity providing services to Iranian aviation companies risks being severed from the international financial system.

The implications are stark. Companies caught doing business with Iran could find themselves cut off from American credit card networks such as Visa and from the global banking infrastructure largely controlled by the United States.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the stakes clear in an official statement. "Under Operation Economic Isolation, we have promised severe consequences for those providing a financial lifeline to the Iranian regime," he said.

"Let this be a warning to anyone doing business with Iran's remaining airlines, all of which we sanctioned today: you risk being disconnected from the global financial system," Bessent emphasized.

The warning accompanies a sweeping action by the U.S. Treasury Department, which imposed 36 new sanctions targeting Iran's aviation sector and additional commercial entities. The economic measure is part of an escalating pressure campaign against Tehran as tensions continue across the Middle East.

The move aims to completely ground the Iranian airline Mahan Air and extend restrictions to all aviation companies operating in the country. The new sanctions target networks of intermediaries, shell companies, cargo handlers, and circumvention shipping routes in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan.

According to Washington, these networks enabled Tehran to acquire American-made aircraft and sensitive technologies. Additionally, the administration froze permits that allowed foreign carriers to conduct overflights through Iranian airspace and terminated exemptions that had permitted the supply of spare parts and fuel.

Experts estimate that the economic blockade on aviation will severely impact air traffic from key regional commercial hubs. Brett Erickson, a director at risk consultancy Obsidian, noted that "the United States is using sanctions to impose an effective siege on Iran's aviation sector from the rest of the world."

Erickson added that "this represents a significant expansion of economic warfare, with expected impacts on civilian travel, commerce, supply chains, and Iran's ability to support its eroding economy."

Meanwhile, Iran is grappling with a severe economic crisis that includes fuel shortages, difficulties exporting oil, and the collapse of its local currency's value. Iranian officials have recently acknowledged that the country is finding it increasingly difficult to withstand American economic pressure.
