Regional Arms Race Threat

Unilateral Nuclear Accord: Washington Moves Forward on Saudi Nuclear Program Without Demanding Diplomatic Normalization

Israeli leadership expressed grave concern over a landmark 30 year nuclear deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia, warning that allowing domestic uranium enrichment on Saudi soil crosses a bright red line and risks fueling a regional nuclear arms race.

Israeli officials expressed profound concern over a historic civil nuclear agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia expected to be signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart. The multi billion dollar accord, spanning 30 years, paves the way for domestic uranium enrichment on Saudi soil under specific technical conditions. Defense officials in Jerusalem view domestic enrichment as a severe security threat that crosses a bright red line, voicing disappointment that Washington uncoupled the nuclear deal from broader diplomatic normalization efforts.

A senior Israeli official intimately familiar with the negotiations warned that local enrichment capabilities inherently carry dangerous dual use potential. The official noted that an enrichment plant, regardless of its civilian designation, provides foundational infrastructure for military applications.

"If there is enrichment on Saudi soil, the meaning is a danger to Israel's security," the senior official stated. "The silence of the leadership in Israel on this matter is embarrassing, with or without connection to the question of normalization." The official further emphasized that "a civilian enrichment facility is actually a school for developing nuclear weapons".

The Israeli defense establishment warned in numerous internal discussions that granting enrichment technology to Riyadh will prompt neighboring powers to demand identical capabilities. Analysts caution that nations such as Turkey, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates could feel compelled to establish their own domestic enrichment infrastructure. This domino effect risks launching an uncontrolled nuclear arms race across an already volatile Middle East.

According to the terms of the agreement, American firms will construct a specialized uranium enrichment facility operating under a black box model subject to strict oversight. The implementation depends on a joint two year technical feasibility study designed to justify the operational necessity. While Israeli leadership does not oppose a purely civilian Saudi nuclear power program in principle, officials expected the US to leverage nuclear assistance to secure a comprehensive normalization agreement.

Political backlash within Israel mounted rapidly following details of the pending agreement. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticized the government's handling of diplomatic channels, warning that Israel is losing its ability to shape key regional developments.

"The nuclear agreement taking shape over Israel's head could bring about a regional nuclear race and a dangerous loss of control," Bennett stated. He characterized the diplomatic outcome as a "severe strategic failure" that compromises long term national defense interests.
