Israel celebrates hostage Bar Kuperstein's 2nd birthday in captivity

In a poignant display of hope and solidarity, hundreds gathered to mark the 23rd birthday of Bar Kupershtein, who remains in Hamas captivity 543 days after being abducted while working security at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. The event, organized by the Ayelet Hashachar organization in partnership with the Kupershtein family, brought together family members, friends, public figures, and supporters at the Hostages Square.

Kupershtein, who helped evacuate festival-goers during the Hamas attack before being taken captive, was honored with emotional tributes and prayers for his safe return before the upcoming Passover holiday.

His father, despite facing health challenges of his own, delivered an impassioned plea to the Israeli government: "Release everyone now, before Passover!" Addressing his son directly, he added, "Hold on, I will never give up. I love you."

The celebration featured musical performances by rapper Yair Elyatzur and singer Itzi Ackerman, who debuted his new song "And the Redeemed of the Lord Shall Return," written specifically for the hostages' release.

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi of Safed, made his first appearance at the Hostages Square for the occasion. "It's permissible to have different opinions, but we must remain united in this struggle," he told attendees. "Only through unity have we succeeded in the past."

Among the most moving moments was the speech by Elchanan Danino, whose son Ori was murdered in Hamas captivity. With a voice breaking from emotion, Danino shared reflections on his parallel journey with the Kupershtein family and led the crowd in prayer for Bar's return by Passover eve.

Julie Kupershtein, Bar's mother, addressed the divisions in Israeli society, stating, "I choose not to hate and to hold onto the light instead." The event concluded with her releasing balloons skyward in a symbolic gesture of hope.

Rebbetzin Yemima Mizrachi, who has been actively supporting the hostages' cause since October 7, delivered a touching monologue directed at Bar about his parents' tireless advocacy: "Your father began speaking again because of you—you wouldn't believe what your parents are doing for your return."

Other speakers included actor Doron Sheffer, Rebbetzin Rachel Bazak, Rabbi Snir Gueta, Eden and Oded Menashe, Tzofit Grant, and Rabbi Yitzchak Fanger.

Rabbi Shlomo Ra'anan, Chairman of Ayelet Hashachar, emphasized the timing of the event: "Especially as we approach the Festival of Freedom, we must intensify our efforts to bring everyone home. I hope word of this celebration reaches Bar, so he knows he's not forgotten even for a moment."
