After final vote count

Abbas kills minority-government plan

Ra'am chairman delivers final blow to change-bloc leaders' hopes of forming coalition with outside support, declaring minority government slim to non-existent

Mansour Abbas

Ra'am chairman MK Mansour Abbas has shut the door on the change bloc's main path to forming a coalition, declaring that a minority government with his party's outside support is all but impossible.

Speaking during an internal party consultation after the final vote count, Abbas addressed efforts by Yishar party chairman Gadi Eisenkot and Democrats chairman Yair Golan to assemble a majority for a government. "The chance of a minority government with our support," Abbas said flatly, "is slim to non-existent."

The statement follows Abbas's earlier assessment that the seat distribution settled by the ballot box has left the change bloc with no viable coalition options. "With these numbers, there is no government," Abbas said, making clear that the political complexity and the conditions on the ground do not allow Ra'am to serve as an external safety net.

Change-bloc leaders had hoped to find a path to a coalition that would rely on Ra'am's support and the Joint List's abstention, but Abbas's unequivocal position pulls the ground out from under the entire scenario.
