A senior source in United Torah Judaism has proposed backing a minority government led by Gadi Eisenkot, with the chareidi party supporting it from outside the coalition, Channel 12 reported Thursday.
Under the proposed arrangement, UTJ would remain outside the government but would abstain in votes rather than oppose the government or its legislation. Eisenkot would also have Ra'am's eight votes available if he chose to rely on them. In such a scenario, the Netanyahu bloc would hold 46 seats, compared to 48 for an Eisenkot bloc, two more than Netanyahu's.
The UTJ source who spoke to the channel said: "From Netanyahu we'll get nothing. Our alliance with him is exhausted, especially in a situation where he doesn't have 61. Our interest is to return to being a decisive factor in the Knesset. In a situation where a unity government is formed, there's a chance we'll go into the wilderness, into the opposition desert. That's not what we were elected for."
