As Israel's 2026 election results clarify and sketch a complex political landscape, and with the US presidential election a week away, the security front with Iran is returning to center stage. Danny Ayalon, former Israeli ambassador to Washington and deputy foreign minister, assesses that the political dynamics now in play may lead to major military action in the near term.
According to Ayalon, given the policy developments on the table, an Israeli strike on Iran could be carried out within a matter of weeks. "In two to three weeks there could be a strike on Iran," he said. "Today it depends on the Iranians, if they decide to enter symbolic negotiations (and right now it doesn't look that way, they think all the cards are in their hands), then Trump will reach some kind of arrangement with them. No matter what the results are, the main thing is that it will be on record and he'll make the V sign that he defeated Iran. The truth is they're just playing with him and continuing to mock him, and the more this continues in this way, he'll have no choice."
