Haredi Police Clashes in Jerusalem Over Parking Tickets

Violent disturbances erupted in Jerusalem on Thursday afternoon, leaving three police officers injured during clashes with Haredi protesters near Bar-Ilan Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

According to police, the unrest began following the issuance of a municipal enforcement citation by a city inspector. Shortly afterward, dozens of protesters gathered in the area, blocking streets and confronting police officers who had arrived at the scene. The situation quickly escalated, with demonstrators throwing stones and other objects at police forces and overturning at least one police vehicle.

Police said three officers were lightly injured during the clashes and several patrol cars sustained significant damage. Footage from the scene showed a police vehicle flipped onto its side amid debris, as officers attempted to disperse the crowd.

In a statement, police said that “a disturbance and violent confrontations developed, including stone-throwing at police forces and the injury of three officers, following the issuance of a municipal enforcement report.” The statement added that the clashes intensified on Hanna Street in Jerusalem after enforcement activity was carried out in the area.

“Additional forces were dispatched to the scene and were also attacked with stones and objects,” police said. “As a result, three officers were injured lightly, and extensive damage was caused to several police vehicles.” Police confirmed that crowd-control measures were authorized and are being used to restore order.

Border Police units were also deployed to the area as part of efforts to contain the unrest and reopen roads to traffic. Authorities stressed that the operation remains ongoing and that further arrests are possible.

Police emphasized that they view the incident as a serious breach of public order. “Any disturbance, particularly one that endangers public safety and harms police officers, will be met with a rapid, determined, and uncompromising response,” the statement said, adding that an investigation has been opened and those responsible will be brought to justice.

Bar-Ilan Street has long been a flashpoint for tensions between law enforcement and segments of the Haredi community, particularly over enforcement actions and perceived infringements on religious norms. Thursday’s clashes once again highlighted the volatility of such confrontations in the heart of the capital.
