The former head of the Shin Bet, Yoram Cohen, officially announced his entry into political life and his joining of the "Yashar" party led by Gadi Eisenkot.
In a statement released this morning, Cohen said: "After years of service in the security forces and out of deep concern for the future of the state, I have decided to join Gadi Eisenkot. At this time, Israel needs a leadership that puts the good of the country before any other interest, a leadership that will restore the trust of the citizens in the state and its institutions."
Cohen, who headed the Shin Bet between 2011 and 2016, is considered a figure with widespread public appreciation, including among the national-religious public from which he comes.
The chairman of the party, Gadi Eisenkot, welcomed the move: "Yoram Cohen is a man of values, a fighter, and a commander of the highest caliber. His joining is a significant addition of strength to the leadership that Israel so desperately needs. Together, we will lead a process of repair and national unity."
In political circles, it is estimated that Cohen’s joining is intended to appeal to right-wing and national-religious audiences who are looking for a state-oriented and security-focused alternative. Cohen is expected to take a high spot on the party list for the upcoming elections.
