31 Athletes Jump from World's Highest Bridge

Days after opening to traffic, China's Huajiang Canyon Bridge attracted BASE jumpers from 21 countries for record-breaking leaps nearly 2,000 feet above a river

A newly constructed bridge in China has quickly become the world's premier extreme sports venue, drawing some of the planet's most daring athletes to attempt BASE jumps from 625 meters above the Beipan River. The dramatic footage from these leaps offers a breathtaking glimpse into one of the most challenging feats in adventure sports.

The jumps took place at the Huajiang Canyon Bridge in Guizhou Province in southwestern China, which towers 625 meters above the river below. The bridge opened to vehicular traffic on September 28, 2025, and within days became the centerpiece of an international extreme sports competition.

Thirty-one athletes representing 21 countries and regions, including China, Russia, and Italy, participated in the International High Bridge Extreme Sports Tournament. During the event, competitors performed jumps from various bridges throughout Guizhou, culminating in leaps from the newly opened structure, the tallest of them all.

Among the jumpers was 22-year-old French athlete Mathieu Lao Massoni, who has already logged more than 700 BASE jumps and over 1,000 skydives. For him, the opportunity to jump from the world's highest bridge was impossible to pass up.

Massoni approached the edge of the bridge, prepared himself, and launched into the void. During one of his jumps, he deployed a wingsuit and soared for several seconds above the canyon, executing a mid-air rotation to look back at the massive bridge and the karst landscape below. He continued gliding for approximately 10 more seconds before deploying his parachute and landing safely on a raft in the river.

The bridge's height puts the jump into almost incomprehensible perspective: at 625 meters above the river, it stands nearly nine times taller than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

Behind the scenes, safety personnel monitored jump conditions, including wind speed and direction. One of them, a Dutch expert named Cam, brings 13 years of BASE jumping experience and also works as a stunt performer and event organizer.

Italian jumper Julian Astor Asdorian Bidoggia also participated in the event. He had previously jumped from the Beipanjiang Bridge when it held the title of world's highest bridge. According to him, China continues building ever-taller bridges, and he intends to be there to jump from them.

Guizhou Province itself has emerged as a bridge-building powerhouse in recent years. More than 32,000 bridges have been completed or are under construction in the province, which now claims nearly half of the world's 100 highest bridges.

For drivers, the new bridge serves as a transportation route. For BASE jumpers, it has become something entirely different: a 625-meter launch point from which the only logical course of action is simply to jump.
