The United States is deploying an additional aircraft carrier to the Middle East following widespread reports of technical difficulties and deteriorating conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, currently operating in the region. According to senior Pentagon officials speaking with ABC News, the USS George Washington is being withdrawn from the Pacific theater and redirected to the Middle East, marking the first time in years that the Asian front will be left without any American carrier presence.
The Lincoln has been deployed for nearly ten months, significantly exceeding the US Navy's standard six-month deployment cycle. This extended operation has reportedly taken a toll on both the vessel and its crew. Recent weeks have seen mounting reports of maintenance issues and declining morale aboard the carrier, which has been maintaining a continuous presence in the Persian Gulf region as part of US efforts to pressure Iran.
The Navy was recently forced to deny reports of shortages of feminine hygiene products on other vessels in the region, also attributed to prolonged deployments. Some reports have described morale aboard the Lincoln as extremely low, with claims that sailors attempted to jump ship and swim to shore in several instances. The deployment of the George Washington will allow the Lincoln to stand down from active operations after its unusually extended mission.
