Rather than focusing on the solemnity of the upcoming Days of Awe, the song takes a different approach. It emphasizes the opportunity that Elul presents: a time when God is portrayed as especially close and welcoming. The lyrics reference the well-known biblical verse "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" ("Ani l'dodi v'dodi li") whose initial letters spell out the word Elul. The song's message is that when people reach out to God, He draws them near in return.
