From oil fields to electric motors

Saudi Arabia's 1,000-hp electric supercar

CEER, the kingdom's state-backed carmaker, debuts the Exobot Sedan and SUV: three motors, 0–100 km/h in just over two seconds, a 48-inch 8K dashboard screen, and a 670 km range, all to be manufactured in Saudi Arabia as the oil giant pivots to electric vehicles

Saudi Arabia, a country synonymous with the global oil industry, is making a serious push into electric vehicles. The kingdom's state-backed automaker CEER has unveiled its first two flagship models, the Exobot Sedan and Exobot SUV, as part of an ambitious plan to establish a domestic car industry and launch seven models by 2030.

The vehicles look more like concept cars from a tech expo than production models headed for the road. Both stretch over five metres in length and more than two metres in width, and feature a massive windscreen measuring approximately 2.4 metres across. CEER has fitted them with enormous upward-opening doors called "Shahin Wing", inspired by the falcon, which include a glass section that can switch from transparent to opaque.

Even the lighting carries symbolic weight: the front and rear incorporate 32 individual light units combined, a nod to 1932, the year the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in its current form.

Inside, the futuristic design continues. A curved 8K-resolution screen measuring 48 inches stretches across the dashboard, alongside a central 10.4-inch display. Rear passengers get their own eight-inch screen. Steering is handled by steer-by-wire technology, eliminating the traditional mechanical link between the wheel and the road, and the rear wheels can also turn to improve manoeuvrability in the oversized vehicle.

One of the more intriguing systems, unsurprisingly given the Saudi climate, is called Halo Cooling. According to the company, it can drop the cabin temperature from 65°C to 32°C in just ten minutes.

As for performance: the high-performance versions of the Exobot use three electric motors driving all four wheels, capable of producing up to 1,096 horsepower and around 1,500 Newton-metres of torque. The sedan is expected to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 2.1 seconds, with the SUV managing the same in around 2.4 seconds. That said, CEER's official website currently also lists more modest figures of 850 horsepower and a 0–100 time of 2.6 seconds, likely depending on the final variant and specification.

The powertrain is paired with a 112 kWh battery pack. According to published figures, the sedan may offer a range of up to around 670 kilometres, while the SUV will reach approximately 560 kilometres. An 800-volt architecture is expected to enable charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

CEER itself is a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Taiwan's Foxconn. The cars will be manufactured at the company's facility in King Abdullah Economic City, and according to Reuters are expected to go on sale in early 2027. The company is planning five additional models by 2030, as part of the Saudi effort to reduce economic dependence on oil and establish a significant domestic automotive industry.
