Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an unusual public warning Tuesday to international airlines, declaring that Russian airspace is becoming increasingly dangerous as Ukraine ramps up its drone campaign deep inside Russian territory.
In a televised address, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is significantly intensifying drone attacks throughout Russia and urged carriers to take this into account. "We want to warn every airline using Russian airspace, every insurer, everyone still using Russia's main airports: Russian skies are becoming completely unsafe," the Ukrainian leader stated.
He emphasized that drones would be present "in Russian skies on a scale that needs to be taken into account." Zelenskyy was careful to clarify that Ukraine is not threatening civilian aviation directly. "Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation—not a single civilian aircraft. There will simply be drones in Russia's skies on a scale that needs to be taken into account," he said, framing the danger as a consequence of the war Russia initiated.
