New study

Weight-loss drugs tied to vision loss

Rutgers researchers find GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy raise risk of rare optic nerve damage that may be irreversible, though absolute risk remains very low

Weight-loss medications

A large-scale study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine has found that GLP-1 medications, used to treat diabetes and promote weight loss, are associated with a slight increase in the risk of damage to the blood supply of the optic nerve.

According to the researchers, the increase amounts to three to four additional cases per 10,000 patients over an 18-month period. The damage can cause sudden blurring, loss of part of the visual field, and in some cases permanent injury.

The risk was found primarily among men and those aged 50 to 65. However, the researchers emphasize that the study found only a statistical association, and did not prove that the drugs themselves cause the damage. They say there is no reason for alarm, but any sudden change in vision requires an urgent eye examination.
