The sharp exchange followed explicit warnings from President Trump detailing a tit for tat targeting strategy regarding commercial shipping disruptions. Trump stated, "From this point forward, whenever the Islamic Republic of Iran fires on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether by missile, rocket, drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy a bridge or power station, including those located near or inside the capital Tehran."
Iranian military commanders responded with coordinated threats targeting the broader energy and economic infrastructure of the region.
