Nobel Peace laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a specialized hospital in Tehran following a critical health crisis behind bars. Her foundation confirmed on Sunday that the transfer took place after days of pleading from her family and international human rights organizations. Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since December in the Zanjan facility, reportedly lost consciousness twice in recent weeks and has been in a fragile state since a heart attack in March.

The activist’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced that the transfer was finally authorized after government-appointed medical examiners concluded that she requires treatment that can only be provided outside of a prison environment. Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, expressed a sense of profound relief, stating that he can finally "breathe lightly" now that his sister is under the care of a dedicated medical team. He had previously blamed the Iranian intelligence agency for blocking her medical care.

Mohammadi’s health has seen a dramatic decline during her current term, which her family attributes in part to being "heavily beaten" during her initial arrest in Mashhad. In addition to her heart condition, she suffers from a pre-existing blood clot in her lung that requires constant monitoring and blood-thinning medication. Reports from the hospital indicate her blood pressure has been swinging between dangerous extremes, and she has required supplemental oxygen to breathe.

While the Iranian government has granted a temporary suspension of her sentence on bail, her foundation insists that this is not enough. They are calling for her "unconditional freedom" and the total dismissal of all charges, noting that she still faces 18 years of remaining prison time. The Nobel committee has also weighed in, warning that without permanent, specialized care, the 53-year-old activist’s life remains at high risk.

Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her tireless advocacy for women's rights and her campaign against the death penalty in Iran. She has spent much of her adult life in and out of prison, becoming a global symbol of resistance against the Iranian regime's repressive policies. Her current hospitalization has reignited international calls for the Islamic Republic to cease its persecution of political dissidents and human rights defenders.

The situation remains fluid as doctors work to stabilize her condition. Supporters of the activist are concerned that the regime may attempt to return her to prison as soon as her immediate crisis passes, despite the clear evidence of her deteriorating health. For now, Mohammadi remains under heavy guard in the Tehran hospital, as the world watches whether the Iranian authorities will finally grant her the freedom her health and humanitarian record demand.
