NBA star Deni Avdija has been named one of the torchbearers for Israel’s 2025 Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony.

A Trailblazer on the Court

Born on January 3, 2001, in Beit Zera, Israel, Deni Avdija grew up in a family of athletes. His Yugoslav father, Zufer Avdija, was a professional basketball player, and his Israeli mother, Sharon Artzi, was a track and field athlete. Avdija began playing basketball in fourth grade with Bnei Herzliya Basket, joining Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth academy in 2013. At age 16, he debuted for Maccabi’s senior team in 2017, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history.

In 2019, at just 18, Avdija was named the youngest-ever Israeli Basketball Premier League MVP, leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to a championship. His accolades include three Israeli League championships (2018, 2019, 2020) and two Israeli League cups. On the international stage, Avdija represented Israel’s national team, winning gold medals at the 2018 and 2019 FIBA U20 European Championships and earning MVP honors in 2019.

Avdija’s global breakthrough came in 2020 when he was selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards in the NBA Draft, becoming the highest-drafted Israeli player in history. He played four seasons with the Wizards (2020–2024), earning NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors in 2021. Since being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2024, Avdija has excelled as a versatile small forward, known for his athleticism, court vision, and defensive skills. His nickname “Turbo” reflects his fast-paced, aggressive style, driving to the basket with speed. As of April 2025, Avdija continues to post solid averages in points, rebounds, and assists in the 2024–25 NBA season.

The Torch-Lighting Ceremony and Avdija’s Potential Fit

Israel’s Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony, held annually at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, marks the transition from Yom Hazikaron to Yom Ha’Atzmaut. The event honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to society, with 12 torchbearers symbolizing the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Past torchbearers include war heroes like Avigdor Kahalani (2023), medical professionals like Dr. Khetam Hussein (2023), and civilians who displayed heroism after the October 7, 2023, attacks, such as Youssef Elziadna (2024).

Avdija’s NBA success mirrors the groundbreaking contributions of past honorees like Danny Gold, developer of the Iron Dome (2015). At age 24, Avdija aligns with the selection of young contributors, such as Reut Amichai, a HaShomer HaChadash volunteer (2023).

The ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, selects torchbearers through a public advisory committee based on nominations.

Avdija's journey embodies the spirit of Israel’s Independence Day: resilience, unity, and excellence. As he continues to shine in the NBA and represent Israel on the global stage, Avdija remains a source of pride for our embattled nation.

Well done, Deni.
