Hamas has executed multiple individuals accused of looting humanitarian aid, as part of a sweeping and increasingly harsh crackdown aimed at restoring control over growing lawlessness in the Gaza Strip, according to sources close to the militant group, as reported by Reuters.

This latest wave of internal violence comes amid reports of armed gangs raiding food stores, community kitchens, and other aid distribution points, signaling a breakdown of civil order under Hamas’ governance. While the group claims that some of the individuals targeted were collaborating with Israel, no independent verification has been provided, and Israeli officials have not commented on the allegations.

According to the Hamas-run interior ministry, an Israeli drone strike recently killed a police officer and wounded several others in Gaza City as they pursued what they described as “suspected criminals.” The ministry pledged to continue using force to suppress domestic unrest and, in line with its long-standing rhetoric, blamed foreign interference particularly Israel, for exacerbating internal instability.

Ismail Al-Thawabta, a spokesperson for Hamas’ media office, confirmed executions had taken place against those allegedly involved in looting. He further asserted, without providing evidence, that some of the executed individuals were backed by Israel, a frequent justification used by Hamas to legitimize its internal crackdowns.

In an attempt to reassert its authority, Hamas has imposed nightly curfews and mobilized a 5,000-member security force tasked with targeting looters and dissenters throughout Gaza. However, ongoing Israeli drone operations have reportedly impeded Hamas’ efforts, particularly when their armed personnel are identified and targeted from the air.

The unrest follows Israel’s military campaign initiated in response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which resulted in the massacre of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of over 250 individuals. Israel subsequently halted the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza after Hamas refused to release additional hostages in ongoing negotiations. Israel has since imposed a strict blockade, citing Hamas’ systematic misuse of humanitarian aid, allegations that Hamas continues to deny.
