Israeli police discovered and neutralized an Iranian-made explosive device near Kibbutz Alumim, close to the Gaza border, last week. The explosive, believed to have been left behind by Hamas terrorists during the brutal October 7, 2023, attack, was located near the kibbutz entrance where intense fighting occurred. According to Kan, the device was identified by officers from the Netivot police station and safely neutralized by bomb disposal experts from the Southern District.

The explosive charge, described as a type used by Hamas during the Simchat Torah massacre, was abandoned during battles in which Israeli police engaged dozens of terrorists to prevent their advance deeper into the country. These defensive efforts were critical in saving numerous lives, as the fighting blocked Hamas militants from progressing beyond the border communities. The discovery underscores the ongoing threat posed by remnants of the October 7 attack, during which Hamas forces killed 22 civilians in Kibbutz Alumim, including 20 foreign workers from Thailand and Nepal. Additionally, two residents, Nepalese national Bipin Joshi and police sergeant Ran Gvili, were taken hostage. Gvili was killed in action, and his body was taken by the terrorists.

An IDF investigation into the events revealed that three civilians; two Israelis and one foreign worker were tragically killed by Israeli security forces after being mistaken for terrorists amid the chaos. The kibbutz, a small agricultural community, was one of many targeted in the coordinated Hamas assault that sparked widespread violence. The neutralization of the explosive, conducted without incident, highlights the expertise and vigilance of Israel’s police sappers in addressing lingering dangers from the attack. Authorities continue to investigate to ensure no further threats remain in the area.
