The Pentagon is preparing US military bases to keep running for at least 90 days without outside support, in case a major war cripples power grids, disrupts supply chains and threatens critical infrastructure on American soil, Fox News reported.
Under the initiative, called FORTRESS, every major military installation in the continental United States would have to sustain essential operations on its own, including electricity, water, fuel and communications.
“Power is combat now. Without electricity, you lose communications, water, logistics, assembly lines and just basic military command structures,” said Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell.
The Pentagon had already announced plans to reduce its bases’ dependence on civilian power grids. The new 90-day standard goes further, covering all the essential services needed to keep military operations going.
