IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir confronted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Iran policy in the past 24 hours, Amit Segal reported. Zamir warned that the political leadership may be leading Israel into a miscalculation with Iran ahead of the Israeli elections. He fears that such an error could provoke a dramatic escalation, and that the escalation would come immediately.
The confrontation comes in the final days of the campaign. As JFeed reported on Sunday, Israelis were then two days away from voting for the 26th Knesset.
Earlier this month, Ynet reported that Zamir had told senior US government and military officials that a renewed escalation with Iran could make it impossible to hold the election on schedule. At the time, the Israeli Air Force and Military Intelligence were maintaining heightened readiness for a possible escalation with Iran. The IDF declined to comment on Zamir's reported remarks.
On Sunday, Netanyahu recorded a video warning to Iran from an Arrow missile defense battery. In it, he said Israel has intelligence signs that Iran and its proxies may try to disrupt the election with attacks.
