Passengers waiting at Ben Gurion Airport's train station experienced moments of panic Monday afternoon when a series of loud explosions echoed through the facility, causing major disruptions to rail service across central Israel.
An initial investigation revealed that the dramatic incident was caused by an innocuous-looking helium balloon that drifted into the overhead electrical cables supplying power to the trains. The balloon made contact with the high-voltage lines, triggering a severe electrical short circuit and secondary explosions that reverberated through the passenger hall.
Travelers on the platforms and inside train cars described alarming scenes. According to witnesses cited by Ynet, immediately after a train stopped at the station, several loud, consecutive explosions rang out, accompanied by intense flashes of light from the electrical short circuit.
Within seconds, the electrical cable on a parallel track tore loose from the force of the short circuit and fell heavily to the ground.
