The IDF's Military Advocate General has announced it intends to prosecute a senior former officer for his role in a deadly incident that resulted in the deaths of a soldier and a renowned scholar. The individual, Colonel (res.) Yoav Yarom, who served as the Chief of Staff of the Golani Brigade, is facing a charge of reckless homicide. The decision is pending a pre-indictment hearing.

The tragic event occurred ten months ago in an archaeological fortress in southern Lebanon. It led to the deaths of Sergeant Gur Kehati, a 20-year-old soldier from the Golani 13th Battalion, and Ze'ev (Jabo) Erlich, a 70-year-old Land of Israel scholar. Yarom was also moderately wounded in the incident. Shortly after the event, Yarom resigned from his position, accepting full responsibility. At the time, he wrote that he believed he "must take full responsibility for the incident" in light of his personal values.

The family of Sergeant Kehati has been informed of the decision to move forward with the prosecution. In a statement, the family expressed their view that the decision to charge Yarom with such a serious offense is "warranted in light of his reckless conduct that led to the tragedy." While acknowledging that the action will not bring back their son, they stated their hope that the prosecution will "contribute to deterring others in the future." The family's statement also noted that they have not yet received updates regarding criminal measures against other officers involved.

Ze'ev Erlich was a unique figure. A lieutenant colonel in the reserves who volunteered for service until the age of 70, he was officially recognized by the IDF as a fallen soldier and received a military burial. He is survived by his wife, six children, and grandchildren. The legal proceedings against a high-ranking officer in connection with the incident underscore the gravity of the events and the military's pursuit of accountability.
