Drafted or Denied:  Yeshiva Students Blocked from Government Housing Lotteries

A significant financial blow to young Haredi men: The Israel Land Authority Council has ruled that yeshiva students who have not regulated their status with the IDF will be barred from participating in government housing lotteries.

The rules of the game for government-subsidized housing in Israel just fundamentally changed.

On Sunday, the Israel Land Authority Council, led by Housing Minister Chaim Katz, passed an unprecedented resolution. Moving forward, if you want to get an eligibility certificate and enter the upcoming "Discounted Apartment" (Dira BeHanacha) lotteries, you must first clear your military status with the IDF.

The move, first reported by political correspondent Michael Shemesh, effectively shuts the door on thousands of young yeshiva students and draft-eligible men who have not formalized their standing with the military.

From the Courtroom to the Real Estate Market

This decision didn't happen in a vacuum. It is the direct result of a series of High Court of Justice rulings. The Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that the state cannot hand out financial perks and government subsidies to citizens who dodge their conscription notices. Now, those legal words are being turned into real-world real estate policy.
