‘They Told Me to Run’: Unlicensed Teen Arrested After High-Speed Midnight Motorcycle Chase

A routine commute home for an off-duty Israeli traffic officer escalated into a dramatic high-speed pursuit on Route 40 near midnight, culminating in the arrest of a sobbing 17-year-old motorcyclist who told police he fled simply because "they told me if there’s a cop, run away."

The incident, which was captured on the officer’s helmet-mounted camera and released by the Israel Police National Traffic Bureau, highlights an ongoing crackdown on unlicensed and reckless driving under national enforcement initiatives dubbed "Safe Way" and "Committed to Life."

According to police reports, a patrolman with the southern division of the national motorcycle unit had just completed his shift and was driving home when he spotted a motorcycle operating without a license plate near the southern agricultural community of Beer Tuvia. The vehicle was carrying two passengers, one of whom was not wearing a helmet.

When the officer signaled for the vehicle to pull over, the driver accelerated, initiating a pursuit down unlit rural roads. The chase ended when the teenager lost control of the red-and-black motorcycle, sliding into a roadside ditch.

Footage from the scene captures the immediate aftermath of the crash, with the visibly shaken driver raising his hands and weeping as the officer approaches.

"Please, I'm begging you, please have mercy on me," the teenager can be heard saying in Hebrew.

When questioned by the officer as to why he fled, the suspect offered a blunt explanation: "Because I was scared, because they told me if there’s a cop, run away immediately."

The officer promptly informed the suspect he was under arrest. "You are under arrest for non-compliance with a police officer and for endangering human life—yours and your friend's, who is riding on the back without a helmet," the officer said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the 17-year-old driver did not possess a valid license for that class of motorcycle.

The vehicle was impounded at the scene, and the teenager was issued a formal summons for a hearing and a court appearance on charges of driving without a proper license and failure to obey law enforcement.

The Israel Police praised the off-duty officer's vigilance, noting that the apprehension occurred while he was off-the-clock. The traffic department released the footage as part of its public awareness campaign amid a broader national effort alongside the National Road Safety Authority to curb rising traffic fatalities and unlicensed driving on Israeli highways.
