Barry Levitt (80) Named as Victim of Jerusalem Balcony Collapse

Levitt was killed when a private balcony collapsed onto a bakery in Jerusalem's Rechavia neighborhood, just hours after police and the municipality had inspected the building following reports of sagging.

According to Magen David Adom, Levitt was trapped beneath the rubble for several long minutes while unconscious, and died of his injuries shortly after being extracted. An 80-year-old woman was pulled from the scene in light condition, and a teenage boy and girl, both around 16, sustained light injuries. Medical teams also treated three people at the scene for shock.

Just hours before the collapse, police had carried out an inspection of the building together with the municipality, after neighbors in the area noticed the balcony sagging. A professional called to the scene recommended installing scaffolding and beginning work to stabilize the balcony, but it collapsed before that work could begin.

One neighbor described leaving for work that morning and noticing debris at the building's entrance, but not thinking much of it, adding that another neighbor had apparently spotted the sagging days earlier and called in professionals. A witness told Kan News she had left the bakery just three minutes before the collapse, calling her survival a miracle.
