No GPS Needed: New Missile Guidance System Proves More Reliable in Global Conflicts
Israel Aerospace Industries has launched the LAHAT ALPHA, a laser-homing anti-tank missile with an operational range exceeding 20 kilometers, designed to provide cost-effective precision in GPS-denied environments.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a major global defense and aerospace technology provider, has launched the newest addition to its missile lineup: the LAHAT ALPHA. This next-generation laser-homing anti-tank missile directly addresses the growing worldwide demand for cost-effective precision munitions capable of operating at extended ranges, boasting an operational reach of over 20 kilometers.
The LAHAT ALPHA system is designed specifically for stand-off engagement, granting military forces the ability to target high-value assets from a distance. Its capabilities make it effective against a wide range of threats.
Laser-Homing: The Reliable Guidance Method
A key feature of the LAHAT ALPHA is its reliance on laser-homing technology. The missile can be launched by a vehicle or a helicopter from beyond line of sight (BLOS) and accurately follows a laser spot designated by ground or airborne laser designators.
This guidance method is considered highly dependable in modern warfare, as it allows forces to overcome common battlefield challenges, such as GPS denial and limited visibility. The system is also designed for rapid deployment, requiring less than one week of training for operators.
Lethality and Versatility
The LAHAT ALPHA is a robust missile, measuring two meters in length and weighing 25 kilograms. It features a large warhead that comes in both anti-tank and fragmentation variations, giving it significant battlefield versatility.
With this warhead, the missile is capable of destroying main battle tanks, penetrating fortified structures, neutralizing coastal targets, and striking fast-moving targets. The LAHAT ALPHA builds on the legacy of the original LAHAT missile, which has been operational and battlefield-proven for the past three decades with numerous land, naval, and air forces globally, including the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
IAI leadership emphasized that the new missile was developed to meet modern military needs for volume, precision, and extended reach.
Boaz Levy, President and CEO of IAI, stated that LAHAT ALPHA "reflects IAI’s dedication to delivering proven capabilities that address modern army needs for volume and precision at extended ranges. We are proud to unveil a missile that was developed based on decades of knowledge in missiles and laser homing technology." He added that this innovation "reinforces our role in ensuring our customers’ readiness for future challenges."
Guy Barlev, EVP and General Manager of the Systems, Missiles and Space Group at IAI, noted that the LAHAT ALPHA was developed to meet customer requirements by "adding range and lethality to a highly effective, proven missile, meeting the global demand for powerful and competitively priced missiles.”
