The IDF has killed more than 500 terrorists and located over 100 tunnel shafts in the Rafah area, according to Ynet.
The IDF is concerned about the political leadership making a decision on whether to hold the Philadephi corridor and therefore seeks to ensure a more rapid defeat of Hamas.
IDF soldiers have thus far operated in and around Rafah and the Philadelphi corridor, though they have not yet entered the core city.
