Newly minted Foreign Minister Gideon Saar gave an interview today (Thursday) for Channel 14, explaining Israel's current war aims in the north and south.

According to Saar, Israel wants two things out of a ceasefire in the north: the demilitarization of the entirety of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, and the prevention of any rearmament by Hezbollah.

In response to a question of how exactly the second item would be enforced, Saar said that the agreement itself would not contain provisions for that, and that it would all depend on the determination of the government.

Defense Minister Israel Katz has repeatedly insisted that any agreement with Hezbollah involve Israel having a free hand in preventing Hezbollah rearmament via any direction - by land through Syria, or by land and sea through Lebanese ports or its airport.

Lebanese sources, however, have been negative on the idea of the IDF being able to retaliate against Hezbollah violations and have repeatedly insisted on the Lebanese Army having sole and exclusive responsibility for enforcing UN Resolution 1701.
