Two Children Bitten by Snakes in Two Weeks

A 12-year-old boy was bitten by a viper while playing with friends, and a toddler arrived at hospital with a swollen, discolored leg. Doctors warn that snake season is at its peak

Viper Snake

Two concerning cases of snake bites involving children were documented over the past two weeks at Emek Medical Center in Afula, Israel.

A 12-year-old boy from a Galilee community was bitten by a viper while playing with friends in his neighborhood, while a two-year-old toddler from a community in the Jezreel Valley was rushed to the hospital with significant swelling and a discolored leg. Medical teams responded quickly in both cases and successfully stabilized the children.

The incidents add to a series of snake bite cases that have occurred across the country in recent months. Physicians are warning that during the summer months, as temperatures rise, snake activity increases significantly and their venom glands become particularly active

"I saw something brown at the edge of the drawer"

The 12-year-old described the frightening moments of the attack. While playing with friends in the neighborhood, he opened a drawer inside a makeshift "fort" they had built.

At the edge of the drawer, he spotted something brown that turned out to be a snake, which quickly bit him. The boy said he tried to remain calm and stay still, as he had been taught. "It hurt and the bite area swelled up immediately", he recounted.

A snake handler who arrived at the scene after the incident identified the reptile as a viper—one of the most venomous snakes in Israel. The boy was treated in the pediatric intensive care unit, and after his condition improved, he was transferred to the children's ward for continued treatment and monitoring.

The boy's father wanted to convey an important message to the public: "It's crucial to emphasize that in case of a snake bite or suspected bite, you must call for help and not move. If my son had decided to run home, which was several minutes' walk away, the venom would have spread through his body and caused immediate life-threatening danger".

Two-year-old with discolored leg

About a week earlier, a two-year-old boy from a community in the Jezreel Valley arrived at Emek Medical Center after being bitten on the leg by a snake. The toddler was rushed to the hospital suffering from significant swelling and a discolored leg, signs indicating that venom had entered his body.

In this case as well, medical teams acted swiftly and provided life-saving treatment. The toddler's condition stabilized and he was discharged home after medical observation.

Important guidelines for preventing bites

Dr. Ronen Pomp, a senior physician in the Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Emek Medical Center, explains that the risk of encountering snakes can be reduced through several simple measures. "To avoid being bitten, make sure that in your yard or around your home there are no piles of garbage or objects where snakes can hide. It's important not to stick your hand under rocks or behind objects you can't see, because that's how most bites occur".

Dr. Pomp emphasized the importance of the correct response in case of a bite: "Around a person who has been bitten, it's important to calm the person, immobilize the affected limb so the venom doesn't spread, and call emergency services as quickly as possible to evacuate them to the hospital, where they can be monitored and treated for the bite".

Doctors warn that the Palestine viper, found throughout Israel, is considered particularly venomous and dangerous. Its venom glands are located in the back of the skull and give the head a characteristic triangular structure. The venom is injected through hollow fangs and can cause serious harm and even death in extreme cases.
