WATCH: Hospital Cameras Capture Assassination Attempt on Mohammed Sinwar

The IDF targeted Gaza’s European Hospital in a bid to kill Hamas commander Muhammad Sinwar—his fate is unclear, but if the mission was successful, it could be a turning point in the Israel-Gaza War.

Yesterday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a targeted airstrike on the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, aiming to assassinate Muhammad Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader and brother of the late Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in October 2024.

Muhammad Sinwar, considered a leading figure in Hamas’s military wing and a planner of the October 7, 2023, attack, was believed to be operating from an underground command center beneath the hospital. The strike was a complex operation, involving dozens of munitions, possibly including U.S.-supplied bunker-busting bombs, designed to eliminate anyone in the targeted tunnel.

The IDF said that the hospital was being used by Hamas for terrorist activities, exploiting civilian infrastructure. Of course, Hamas denied using the hospital for military purposes, calling Israeli claims “lies.”

The strike’s aftermath saw additional IDF attacks in the area, to prevent access to the targeted tunnel. Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired rockets toward Ashkelon and Sderot in retaliation, citing “Zionist massacres.”

Israeli officials expressed uncertainty about Sinwar’s fate, with ongoing efforts to confirm his death, which could take days or weeks, as seen in past cases like Mohammed Deif.

Some sources suggested a high likelihood of his elimination due to the strike’s intensity, but Hamas has not confirmed or denied his status. The operation was based on a “sudden opportunity,” and Israel did not inform the U.S. beforehand, coinciding with U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East tour and hostage negotiations in Qatar.

The strike occurred as an Israeli delegation, alongside Trump’s envoys, arrived in Doha for ceasefire and hostage talks. Israeli officials noted Sinwar’s hardline stance on negotiations, suggesting his potential death could ease efforts for a hostage deal, as he was a key decision-maker.
