Israel Health Ministry Issues Winter Preparedness Guidelines

As winter approaches, Israel's Health Ministry called on the public Monday, particularly at-risk populations, to get vaccinated against influenza early rather than waiting for illness rates to rise. Flu vaccines are now available at health fund clinics nationwide, with the ministry emphasizing the importance of early vaccination to prevent severe illness and complications.

Simultaneously, the ministry has distributed guidelines to hospitals and health funds in a winter preparedness circular sent for public comment until next week. The directives focus on preparing for an anticipated increase in respiratory illness, with emphasis on influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

Hospitals have been instructed to prepare for surges by reinforcing professional staff, separating patients with respiratory symptoms, and using protective equipment as needed. Health funds were directed to expand the distribution of vaccination sites, promote public awareness among members, and prepare to extend operating hours and utilize telemedicine services as necessary, with the goal of strengthening community-level response.

Additionally, a campaign began last week to distribute flu vaccines to approximately 400 locations nationwide, including geriatric institutions, assisted living facilities, and Disabilities Administration facilities under the Welfare Ministry, aimed at making vaccines accessible to at-risk populations. Geriatric institutions are also receiving distribution of the medication Tamiflu.

The guidelines also address vaccines against COVID-19 and pneumococcus according to medical indications, completion of routine childhood vaccinations, and vaccination of healthcare workers against influenza.

Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Medical Division at the Health Ministry, stated: "Winter brings with it each year an increase in respiratory illness and strain on the healthcare system, so it's important to prepare early. Alongside the preparedness of hospitals and health funds, we call on the public, particularly at-risk populations, to get vaccinated against influenza early. The vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and complications."

Why Is Vaccination Important?

Last winter saw severe cases of influenza illness, including the death of a 5-year-old child who suffered from flu and was brought to Wolfson Hospital in critical condition. Four women were hospitalized in serious condition due to flu complications in the general intensive care unit at Beilinson, all sedated and on ventilators.

These cases underscore the critical importance of early vaccination, especially for at-risk populations such as the elderly, pregnant women, young children, and people with underlying medical conditions.
