Eisenkot's Dramatic Minority Gov't Prep

Fearing internal opposition to forming a minority government with Arab parties, Gadi Eisenkot's campaign takes extraordinary steps to ensure party discipline

Gadi Eisenkot

Following Gadi Eisenkot's statements that he does not rule out forming a minority government with the support of Arab parties, and concerns within his campaign about internal opposition from list members to such a move, the steps being taken behind the scenes have now been revealed.

Political commentator Amit Segal disclosed an unusual demand that arose within Eisenkot's campaign headquarters, aimed at preventing distortion of the faction's position in dramatic votes, particularly regarding the swearing-in of a government.

According to Segal's report, the campaign manager approached list members and informed them that consideration had been given to having them all sign a legally binding document: "We considered having you sign a commitment document to resign from the Knesset and not vote against the faction in a government swearing-in, but we gave up on it."

Instead of the original document, the campaign decided on an alternative approach involving the drafting of an ethical code that would obligate all list members not to vote contrary to the faction's position.

In addition to the ethical code, and against the backdrop of assessments that some list candidates would struggle to support a government relying on Arab parties, candidates were required to submit a personal written commitment to Eisenkot himself. According to the commitment, if they feel that forming such a government contradicts their conscience, they will resign from the Knesset rather than vote against the faction's position.
