American billionaire and investor John Paulson has announced a historic $250 million donation to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the largest single gift in the institution's history.

The Mount Scopus campus will be renamed in honour of Alina and John Paulson following the donation.

The funds will establish a new school of engineering, advance medical research and training through artificial intelligence, and support research in trauma and post-traumatic stress.

Paulson said that "Israel, a nation of only ten million people, has astonished the world with its scientific and technological achievements," and emphasised the Hebrew University's contribution to advancing science and education in Israel.

University president Professor Tamir Sheafer welcomed the donation, saying: "This is far more than a historic philanthropic act, it is a profound expression of confidence in Israel's human capital and a partnership in building our shared future."
